Commerce needs a jumbotron or matrix board for football. Or maybe I just WANT one. East Jackson has one, as does Buford. How nice it would be to see replays of a close call or a great hit or touchdown. Some traditionalists might say it is not good to have that stuff in high school but I disagree. Anything that makes the game more fan friendly and does not hurt the sport should be attempted. And for the argument that “do you know how many books that could be bought instead of a big screen for football?” . That is ridiculous also. One thing has nothing to do with the other as long as the big screen was paid for by the boosters or advertisers like Coke. If public school systems in general cannot make ends meet through the high taxes people pay then that is a problem with the system itself.

I agree a jumbotron would be great and I want one really bad! If not that we really do need something that would make Tiger Field unique now that we no longer have the HILL to run down. What are we going to be known for now?
You know, Tin Man, when I was coming up here, being from Commerce meant that we didn’t care what other folks were doing. We only cared about doing things the Commerce way. We shouldn’t give a rip what East Jackson has. They are, like Weslyan, a manufactured, straight-out-of-the-box school with no history and no tradition. 100 jumbotrons wouldn’t give them what we have. I rather like our simple, old fashioned, classic small town approach to doing things. I wince when I see high school stadiums with things like jumbotrons. We should not try to make the high school experience mirror the college or pro experience. It’s not developmentally or age appropriate, and it’s a bad trend in youth sports and our society. If the CHS Athletic Department wants to spend their money on one, so be it, but worrying about what Jefferson or East Jackson has just makes us look weak. Remember – you wear the black and gold, and that is enough.
Thanks for commenting. Regardless of what other schools have, the fact remains that a big screen for replays would make the viewing experience better. Tradition is great here, no doubt. However enhancements should not be frowned upon just because they are new.
