Someone on the group “Growing up in Commerce, GA” asked- who the first African-American QB for Commerce was. One says Randy Butler* Who was he???
Randy Butler is the correct answer to the question.
He was the backup Tiger QB in 1974 and the starting QB in 1975.
He was a leader. He stepped into the huddle and everyone listened. He was in charge.
In a game versus Stephens County in 1975 which Commerce won by a (12-0) score, he became the only player for the Tigers to ever kick 3 punts of over 50 yards in a single game. — (56, 54, 52 yards)
He later played college football at Louisville University.
After graduation from Louisville, he tried out for the Atlanta Falcons about the year 1980 but did not make the team, as he was one of the final players to be cut.
He was a fine defensive back and an outstanding option quarterback out of the wishbone offense employed by Coach Ray Lamb at that time.
He was also a very good basketball player.
He was a good student and a very good person with great human qualities.
He was one of the finest young men to don the black and gold of Commerce High School.
