Ex-Bulldog selected for JUCO hall of fame

Ex-Bulldog selected for JUCO hall of fame || OnlineAthens.com.

Good story on an ex JCCHS player Odell Collins. This guy was a beast on the field in HS and in Junior College. Too bad it did not work out for him after that. But the focus is what he did accomplish, which is more than 99% of athletes. Making it in top level NCAA football is more difficult than it even sounds and there is some luck involved to not get hurt.

Gainesville 0-6 in Title Games

By admin, December 12, 2009 9:22 pm

The Red Elephants almost stole the AAA State Title from Peach County with no time on the clock. Gainesville was not in control at any point in the game until the final play. I think the coach going for 2 and the win was the right thing to do at the time. Overtime would have been dominated by Peach in my opinion. So Gainesville gambled on one play and just came up short. If you ever wonder what losing feels like, the photo below says it all.

Defense Over Offense

By admin, December 12, 2009 8:48 am

I get tired of cliches especially from the talking heads on TV sports. But one that rings true most of the time is “defense wins championships”. It is absolutely the truth. It is fun to watch great offenses but they can can be stopped once they reach a championship game where they are likely up against a very good defense. Some team examples are in this earlier post.

One example I left out was Commerce in 1999. That semi finals team was better on paper than the 2000 State Champions. The offense was much more balanced since Michael Collins was at receiver with Daniel Carder throwing the ball. They were an impressive team. In reality (that is what counts) they were not better than the 2000 Champs because the champs did what was necessary to win. On that note the 2000 team beat a Buford team that had a better balanced offense.

Yesterday the truth was exposed again when a Calhoun team that was putting up 40 points per playoff game was held to 10 points by  Buford. And they were lucky to get 10 really.  Buford’s defense made Calhoun’s offense look boring and ineffective.

From this point forward I am no longer impressed with so called, great offenses. They will let you down. Find a good defensive team to cheer for. The best example I can show is the New England Patriots. They won 3 Super Bowls with good offense but Great defense. Once they built their offense up with super stars they have yet to win one.

Buford v Calhoun

Today at 430 The Wolves play The Jackets. The games will be on GPTV (whatever channel that is on your cable). If you want to watch online I think it is on gptv.com here.

The AJC had a breakdown of the teams. They had the following quote from a coach that lost to Buford earlier in the year 41-0. ” We were able to put a lot of people in the box. That is definitely the key. You’ve got to hit them in the mouth before they get started.” Hilarious. What does a coach who was unable to score and let the Wolves hang 41 on his team know about stopping them? Or maybe he thought holding Buford to 41 was a moral victory?

Georgia Dome HS Football Championships

By admin, December 5, 2009 6:39 pm

There is a local flavor to the championship games next weekend at the Georgia Dome. Clarke Central won and they play on Friday night at 8pm. Gainesville won as well and play on Saturday at 4:30 pm. Calhoun advanced by beating Lovett and will face Buford Friday at 430.

Buford put a pretty good whipping on Calhoun in last year’s Title game. Hopefully the Yellow Jackets can get Coach Lamb a Championship trophy this year.

Good article on what it means to be a senior football player and possibly playing in your last football game ever.

Another Playoff Game to Watch

Clarke Central will be playing at home this week also if anyone wants to take in a playoff game close by. That program has a lot of history behind it too.

Georgia High School Playoffs

Well my predictions on Lincoln County and Wesleyan facing each other in the Class A Title game were wrong as both lost tonight. That’s a shame. :) Glad to be wrong this time. Clinch, Wilcox, Savannah Christian, and the team that beat the Tigers, Darlington are the last 4 teams standing in Class A.
Calhoun will face Lovett and Buford will play Fitzgerald in the final 4 of Class AA. Gainesville v Flowery Branch will be the closest game to us I believe. They are AAA.  It should be in Gainesville since they are a #1 seed.
