Commerce’s Bridges Coach of the Year

Congrats to commerce Basketball coach Chris Bridges who won the Athens Banner Herald Coach of the Year award. Bridges led the team to a region title and a deep run in the state playoffs. He and his team brought a level of excitement and interest in Tiger basketball that has not been there in a long time. Hopefully that will carry over to next year and more & more fans can jump on board & support the Basketball program.

Commerce Basketball Run Ended

The Tigers Basketball season came to a quick end Saturday night against Whitfield Academy. The defending state champs jumped on the Tigers from the get go and poured it on thereafter.

This Commerce team had one of the best seasons ever though. So the team should be proud of that fact. Also next season there are a lot of returning starters. That fact along with the new gym opening up at the end of this year (I believe), has the future looking bright for the Tigers.

Tigers Advance

The Tigers gained the lead over St Francis in the final minute to advance to round 3. Commerce won over St. Francis (52-48) and hit about six free throws in a row down the stretch, played great help defense in the paint and full court pressure defense forcing about three turnovers in the last two minutes.

Tyler Gamble, Anthony Norris and Greg Hayes were great on the free throw line in the final four minutes of the game.

The entire team played great especially in the second half when the offense came alive.

According to Wjjc this is the first time they’ve reached the third round since Rodney Gary’s team made the final four….. Decades ago.

They play Friday night in Marietta. The opponent is either #1 Whitfield Academy or Paideia. Commerce is playing with house money now so the pressure is on their opponents.

Commerce Survives 1st Round

Commerce won a close game with Our Lady of Mercy (54-52). With two seconds to go in the game, Bubba Bonds hit two free throws, and OLM missed a long shot from half court which hit the rim and bounced away.

The Tigers play at home next Tuesday night against St. Francis.

Commerce advanced to the finals of the region tournament. They play at 830 in Towns county versus Athens Christian.
