I am not a die hard fan of any college football team or pro team. I like whoever is good at different time periods. I am the ultimate bandwagon guy. So I can talk about UGA football objectively. The coaches that were fired were in need of a good firing. I realize it sux to be fired and don’t wish that on anyone. However, the alternative is to let a team underachieve forever.
I heard one local radio guy, Jeff Danzler, try and defend Martinez’s job performance. His defense of Willie was as bad as Georgia’s defense under Willie. Danzler also mentioned how good of a guy Martinez is and how nice he was. While that may be true, how that mattered at all I have no idea.
Then we come to Mark Richt. There is mounting pressure on him and if next year resembles this year he will be on the hot seat. I realize there is a time that a coach becomes ineffective for different reasons. But it takes longer for that to happen in college than in the NFL. Richt has won 2 SEC Titles and played for another. That is no easy task. I would say winning the SEC is more important than winning the fictitious National Title that is basically a dog and pony show.
5 years in between Conference Titles is pushing it though. Actually one year is pushing it in some myopic UGA fans eyes. They are stuck in the past when #34 was running over defenders with ease. They truly believe Georgia is National championship material year in and year out. They are not. They are an elite team under Richt but are not a USC, Texas, Alabama, or Florida. They have one National Title since most of us have been born. They have other titles but they are so far back and some are obscure AP titles and such.
The point is Richt is the best Georgia can do and are lucky to have him. Now if things keep sliding he deserves to go obviously. But to think coaches around the country at big schools are salivating to take over the Bulldog program is naive.
I am glad I don’t cling too tightly to any one college team. It must make life hard to be a fan.
